Messi Scores Twice As Barcelona Beat Athletic Bilbao To Win Copa Del Rey

Lionel Messi scored twice as Athletic Bilbao lost their second Copa del Rey final in a month with Barcelona cruising to a 4-0 win

Barcelona have won the 2021 Copa del Rey and are Spanish Cup champions for the 31st time in their history thanks to a spectacular 4-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in Seville. Barça were the better team from the start and scored four goals in a brilliant second half to win the trophy, and Lionel Messi scored twice in and he lifted the Cup to top it all off.

The result saw Athletic beaten in a Copa del Rey final for the second time this month, having lost the long-delayed 2020 final to Real Sociedad on April 3rd.

Barcelona sent warnings early on, when Frenkie De Jong hit the post in the 5th minute. A few minutes later, Lionel Messi found Griezmann brilliantly and he pulled one back for Messi, but the Argentinean shot it wide. By the 16th minute, Barcelona had 87% possession. In the 26th mintue, Messi combined well with Mingueza, he shoots it, but his shot gets blocked.

At halftime, Barcelona had all of the possession but only one real chance to score while Athletic survived the first 45 minutes.

Second half started, and not even four minutes in, Barcelona had a great chance, Sergino Dest reached Griezmann in a very dangerous area, but Unai Simon denied him. Simon continued his great performance, when he saved Pedri ‘s effort in the 52nd minute. The Catalans were not backing down.

Sergio Busquets missed a sitter in the 53rd minute. Barcelona continued to no take advantage of their chances. That did not last long though, as Antoine Griezmann put a dominant Barca ahead on the hour when he turned in a cross from Frenkie de Jong. 1-0

3 minutes later, de Jong doubled the score for Barcelona, after a great corner from Jordi Alba. Athletic Bilbao were collapsing. 2-0

In the 67th minute, Linoel Messi scored a spectacular goal! The Argentinian picked up the ball inside his own half and drove towards Athletic’s goal, he then combined magnificently with De Jong before rolling the ball into the corner. 3-0

Barcelona were electrifying and Athletic Bilbao just could not keep up. Barcaelona’s captain struck again in the 72nd Minute, when he met a low cross from Jordi Alba and fired into the bottom corner, his shot was too powerful for Athletic keeper. 4-0

There was still time for a disallowed goal by Griezmann that could have made it five, but nothing could spoil the mood for Barcelona as the final whistle came to end the game and give the Catalan giants the title.

Yesterday Copa del Rey win meant Messi’s 35th Trophy as a Barcelona player. “It is very special to lift this Cup as captain of this club, it is a very happy day for this group,” said the captain.

This victory gives Barca their first trophy under manager Ronald Koeman and their first silverware since 2019.
