Minister of State and President of Qatar National Library Participates in Launch of German Edition of his Prominent Book

The Qatar Embassy in Berlin in collaboration with the Berlin Forum for German-Gulf Dialogue and the Arab Cultural House held a ceremony for the German-translated book, 

“The Global Majlis”

His Excellency Dr. Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, Minister of State, Qatar, and President of Qatar National Library, participated in a ceremony on the occasion of the publication of the German translation of his book, The Global Majlis. The ceremony was held by the Qatar Embassy in Berlin, Germany on 21 June 2022, in collaboration with the Arab Cultural House “Diwan” and the Berlin Forum for German-Gulf Dialogue. The book by His Excellency Dr. Hamad recounts his intellectual biography, which combines personal tales and his passion for knowledge, manifested with deep wisdom.

The Global Majlis offers readers a unique insight into His Excellency Dr. Hamad’s lifetime of diplomacy and nuances of statecraft, welcoming them to an intellectual gathering where a new era of cultural diplomacy forges stronger ties between the world’s nations and civilizations. Through his extensive career, His Excellency Dr. Hamad sheds light on his rich journey between aspects of humanity’s major issues, offering many reflections and discussing issues of cultural diplomacy, dialogue of cultures, media, cultural industries and concerns about heritage preservation. This will be the eighth translation of his book, which is already offered to readers in French, English, Spanish, Hindi, Persian, and Turkish among others.

The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al Thani, Ambassador of Qatar to the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Lawrence Al-Hanawi, Director General of the Arab Cultural House, and German orientalist Dr. Sebastian Heine who translated the book from Arabic to German, and each of whom gave a welcome speech. The ceremony concluded with a reading and signing of the book by His Excellency Dr. Hamad. 

Commenting on the occasion, His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah said, “I would like to congratulate Dr. Hamad on the launch of the German translation of his valuable book, The Global Majlis. This ceremony falls in line with the mission of the Arabic Cultural House in bringing cultures closer together, building bridges of communication between them, and introducing Arab culture in the field of thought, literature and the arts.” 

His Excellency Dr. Hamad said, “It is an honor to be attending this ceremony for the publication of the German translation of my book. I hope the book helps provide readers with a deeper cultural understanding of the rich Arab culture and establishes a broader strategic dialogue in the cultural field between Arabs and Germany. I would like to express my gratitude to all those that attended the ceremony and look forward to future cultural exchanges between Qatar and Germany.” 

The Arab Cultural House, the first independent Arab cultural center established by the State of Qatar outside the country, was opened as a testament to Qatar’s commitment to building bridges with nations around the world and contributes to strengthening the Arabic-German relations as part of the German-Qatar Year of Culture held in 2017. 

“Translating books is not merely the transfer of one language to another; it is an act of cultural transference. I thank His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah, for his role in supporting the project of translating Arabic books into German and I congratulate His Excellency Dr. Hamad for issuing the German translation of his book and wish him more success in the future”, said Dr. Lawrence. 

As part of its mission to promote cultural exchange and through its contribution to the German-Qatar Year of Culture in 2017, the Library has also held a variety of initiatives such as the “Arab and German Tales—Transcending Cultures” exhibition which provided insight into the history of Arabic and German fairy and folk tales, and how the two cultures influenced each other. In addition, it launched the “Books – Made in Qatar”, an initiative to encourage the production of Qatari children’s literature
